In a Pinch, Cloud Synchronization Is Not Data Backup

Cloud storage tools keep files updated across your devices, but sync is not the same as a secure backup. If ransomware encrypts a file on your computer, cloud services will sync that damage instantly across your entire network.

Understanding Cloud Sync vs True Backup

Cloud tools like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace are designed for convenience. They mirror changes in real time. If an employee deletes a critical folder, the cloud service deletes it everywhere else.

Cloud providers operate under a shared responsibility model. They keep the servers running. You are responsible for protecting the data you put on those servers.

The 3-2-1-1 Framework for Data Protection

A true backup runs independently from your everyday files. To recover from ransomware or human error, follow the standard 3-2-1-1 backup framework:

• 3 copies - Keep three separate copies of your critical business data.
• 2 media types - Store those copies on at least two different storage media.
• 1 offsite copy - Keep one copy in a separate physical or cloud location.
• 1 immutable copy - Ensure one copy cannot be edited or erased by anyone once saved.

An immutable backup ensures you can restore clean data in minutes after an attack. Without one, a single mistake can potentially hold up your operations for weeks.

Protect Your Data Today

Relying on sync alone leaves your business vulnerable. Review your setup now to prevent costly downtime later.
